outside the trappers cabin

Plein air at Chik-Wauk

One of my favORITE views of the lake…

When on tour of the Chik-Wauk museum I spied this incredible view outside the old trapper’s cabin down in the marshlands. Imagining what the trapper would see and feel, I descended down the embankment with my easel and paints to gain a view of this incredible zone! Steep rocky outcrops, pines, and rippling waters- a Gunflint melody!

In progress, “Outside the Trapper’s Cabin”. You can see my technique using layers of paint in my work, starting with the burnt sienna underpainting, followed by burnt umber shadows. Next, I work stating with the sky, then farthest away horizon line. I then move forward in the piece making the items more in focus and more vibrant as they get closer to the viewer.

This work is a 9”x12” on panel, and when complete will be priced at $850
