This mushroom was found in the northwoods of Minnesota while on a mushroom hunt with our 3 year old son, Orion. After reading a book on mushrooms, Orion was excited about finding them on every walk. When Orion finds a mushroom, his first question is always, "Can I eat it?" In the case of this mushroom, it is edible. In order to find out a mushroom's edibility, we always bring it home, consult our mushroom identification book and use its dichotomous key. We then do a spore print of the mushroom overnight. Once confirmed, our edible mushroom is fried up in butter and eaten! I painted this watercolor after one of our daily mushroom hunts as a family. America the Free, America the Beautiful. But how did we get here? Many forget that millions of sacred Bison were slaughtered during the Euro-American expansion westward in a mad dash of "Manifest Destiny". With this purposeful slaughter, countless Native Americans starved to death, and those who remained lost their traditional ways of life. This Bison skull stands alone but powerful in the face of the American Flag draped gently over its front. The White Man may have won that battle over the West, but like the comeback of the Bison, Native America is growing strong again.

"Whiptail Lizard"

7”x7”
Oil on Board

Available
$340 Framed

Back when I was a little girl growing up in southern California, I used to chase these cute lizards all over the place. One time I caught one, and it’s tail popped off in my hand, writhing about for a long time! I will forever be grateful for my little friends.

"Minnesota Floral"

16”x20”
Oil on Canvas

Gifted to my mother

This piece was commissioned by my mother who is gifting it to the chief of the tribe she works for. Here Minnesota is pictured with both traditional native Woodlands style flowers, and representational native flowers of Minnesota placed in the locations where they are found. The green lines both symbolize vines and are the outline of the major rivers of Minnesota.

"How The West Was Won"

24" x 36"
Oil on Canvas

SOLD

America the Free, America the Beautiful. But how did we get here? Many forget that millions of sacred Bison were slaughtered during the Euro-American expansion westward in a mad dash of "Manifest Destiny". With this purposeful slaughter, countless Native Americans starved to death, and those who remained lost their traditional ways of life. This Bison skull stands alone but powerful in the face of the American Flag draped gently over its front. The White Man may have won that battle over the West, but like the comeback of the Bison, Native America is growing strong again.

"Deer Skull With Dried Bridal Bouquet"

Oil on Canvas
24" x 30"

SOLD

This bouquet was the one used at my own wedding in April of 2011. In the bouquet's freshly cut prime it boasts of fertility, beauty, happiness and growth.

Now the bouquet is wilted and dried, and paired with the deer skull; a reminder of time's passage and inevitable death. Even in death there is beauty in both the bouquet and deer skull.

The idea for this piece came to me in several dreams. In one dream, the armadillo was curled around a mask. In another dream, my paternal grandmother was looking for me. She found me in the woods, and then a man gave me some herbs to be used as medicine.

The bison skull with carnations reminds us that life is beautiful even in the face of death. The skull with flowers looks over an arid landscape with patterning from a Navajo blanket fading into the background. A bright blue sky resonates with the spiritual vibrancy of this western landscape. The orange hues in the bison skull celebrates its freedom.
